A founder’s story

Why I built
Belong.

I’m Matthew, the founder of Belong. Walking and talking gave me a way to journal through a difficult part of my life. I built Belong from that practice, and I’m still using it to work through my own questions.

So I walked. And I talked.

I could catch a thought while the feeling was still fresh. I could pause, change direction, and say what was on my mind without having to turn it into a finished paragraph.

I kept those recordings. They became a record of what I was living through, in my own words.

I wanted a way to come back to it.

Getting a thought out mattered on its own. Over time, I also wanted to understand what kept coming up. There were questions, worries, and hopes I returned to across different days.

Looking back with the help of AI gave me another way to examine those patterns. I could revisit what I had said and ask questions about it without listening through the whole archive every time.

That became the reason to build Belong: a place to speak, keep a record of my life, and explore what I notice over time.

The questions didn’t stop when I built the app.

One thing Belong has helped me look at is the gap between the life I say I want and the way I spend an ordinary day. I can get moving when something feels urgent. Staying consistent when that urgency fades is harder for me.

I’m still working on that. That’s part of why I keep coming back to my journal: to remember what I say matters and look at how I spend my days.
